CHINA DRUGS WITHIN THE COUNTRY
... unable to adequately protect themselves, due to the loss of their navy. In 1842, Chinese signed the Nanking Treaty, which afforded Britian the right to free trade and China was required to pay them 25 million dollars, money they did not have. Many other reasons that China failed to keep out the dope was all of the different wars and treaties they faced. The first of these after Britain, is where Britain and France both fought China from 1856-1860. Already hurt from the last battle, China was not able to take on two countries. The Treaty of Peking gave both of these countries ten ports along China to trade. China also had to pay them more money which she did not possess. The second war was between France and China in 1883- 1885. China was already weakened and becoming weaker by the day. Since China was already in the war with France, she could not afford another war at the same time so she signed the Treaty of Li-Bobanou. This shows how weak China has become. Next, Japan joins the battle for China and declares war in 1894. Japan fights with a new navy that they acquired from the British. Once again China is defeated and has to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895. This depletes more money and land from the Chineseand contributes to the difficulty of removing the dope. The last of the wars was in 1890 when all of the countries join forces and attack China. By 1917 there are 92 treaty ports which became known as the Treaty System. All of these hurt the Chinese by taking their money, killing their people and making them more dependent on the dope to survive. Another factor that contributed to China's failure in removing the dope was the internal problems China was facing, mainly the Tai-Ping Rebellion which lasted until 1870. Although this rebellion appeared at first to remove the dope, it actually had the opposite effect. Hung Hsui-Chuan lead the peasants in the fight but quickly began breaking his own rules by havin...
