“Richard Shelton: A Ten Year Survey”
...elton painted the clothes with a wrinkled detail as if the men were walking in real life and with shadows as if the sun light was hitting them face on. The concrete on the floor had a tiled look with dark lines separating each square. The basic colors used in the painting were black, brown, green, blue, and white. The colors were used for their collard shirts, shoes, and dress pants and ties. The homeless man was dressed in a green trench coat with khaki pants and worn out construction boots. Behind the homeless man, the wall was painted a dark burgundy. When I tried to analyze the painting myself, I saw a totally different image of what the real meaning of the painting was. I saw a homeless man who was trying to sleep but was always awakened by the noises of busy people walking by and looking at him. But that was not the meaning of the painting at all. Richard Shelton got his idea walking through the streets of New York. His meaning was to show that the homeless man was not the weary person, but it was the Garcia 2 business men who were weary because they were all so busy and locked up into the business world. The first man is walking with a drink in his hand, while the second man has a pager on his belt, and the third man has his organizer book in his hand.
