Compare and Contrast "The Glass Menagerie" to "Hamlet"

...was killed. Both men obviously have hatred towards their mother’s for their fathers not being around but once again, Hamlet’s hatred towards Gertrude is much stronger. To watch both of these plays being preformed, there would be aspects of each I would like and dislike. With Hamlet, the play is based on tragedy, sadness, betrayal and madness. Watching this play would be like watching what we call an action movie today. Back in the 1600’s, tragedies were very popular and Hamlet was one of the most popular preformed plays back in that time period. I personally think watching Hamlet would be very interesting and fun to watch. I think it would be much better than reading the play. The Glass Menagerie is considered a “memory play”. This play would be quite a bit different to watch compared to Hamlet. The Glass Menagerie is more a mellow play yet there is drama but no violence. This play always shows Tom’s fathers picture on the wall to let the audience know there was a father but obviously he’s no longer around. At the end of the play, Amanda comments on how Tom is turning out like his father so I think the picture on the wall plays a significant part. As far as the stage production of each play in a performance, they are both similar in some way. Back when Hamlet was first preformed in the 1600’s, stage props and the scenery wasn’t very elaborate. As for today, the showing of Hamlet is probably a lot different. With the Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams felt that atmospheric touches and subtleties of direction play an important role in a drama. He felt as though expressionism and other unconventional techniques were vital to a play like The Glass Menagerie. The actors/actresses should talk the way the audience would understand and the feelings should be easily felt and understood by the audience as well. Another aspect of The Glass Menagerie that makes the stage performance different from Hamlet would be the music. There is one single re-occurring tune and that would be “The Glass Menagerie” played during emotional parts of the play to give the scene more of an emphasis on what the feeling being portrayed is.
