However, they probably speak in Cantonese with their peers. At the same time, Mandarin is highly encouraged to be added on the school curriculum. Third, code mixing is a common phenomenon in HK because learners are incapable of using full English in their conversation and most importantly, teachers have to explain difficult concepts in Chinese to the students who are in poor English standard. Hopefully, all of you will understand the status of the 3 main languages in HK and try your very best to learn them in your life. Conclusion As we all know HK is a multilingual society. Obviously, the 3 main languages made up our speech community are Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Cantonese speakers are the majority group while the use of English and Mandarin is increasing. The influence of multilingualism in HK is probably due to motivation and attitude of using languages, code mixing and medium of instruction. First, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations lead more and more people getting used to use English because it is an international language and therefore it will be no longer a threat to Chinese identity.
