The Essence of Loss/Gain When Moving From Written Word to Movie
...yes when she is telling Cornelia that she wants him to know that even though he betrayed her, she had a good and happy life; including a “good husband and children.” The movie enhances her confusion as she drifts between the images of Hapsy and her baby and the sudden reality of the doctor, Cornelia, and the priest. The mother in “Everyday Use” describes herself as “a large, big-bones woman with rough, man-working hands.” The movie shows her as a stout, strong woman. When you read the story, you have to imagine her reaction when Dee pulls up with her “dress so loud it hurts my eyes…yellows and oranges enough to throw back the light of the sun.” When you add the visual image of the film, you can see the dissent on the mother’s face when she sees her daughter pull up dressed in the brightly colored garb. In addition, the mother resents the fact that Dee looks down on Maggie and her for being simple people. You can see the anger build up when Dee asks for the quilt that the mother had promised to Maggie. The story only explains the situation but the visual image of the interaction makes the characters seem alive. In “The Worn Path”, the grandmother is traveling down a path to town in order to retrieve some medicine for her grandson. She has taken this path many times before. When you read the story, you have to visualize the old woman encountering all the deterrents she meets on her way; however, when you watch the video, you can see she is determined not to let anything stop her. When she encounters the hunter and he attempts to dissuade her from going any further, she firmly states, “I bound to go to town, mister…the time come around.” In the mo...
