The Overcoat
...or said that it could not be fixed, that he would have to buy another one. Though the overcoat took Akikay forever to get, he finally got it (p927-). Almost starving himself to get it, months after it being finished, he finally got it. When he gets the overcoat, he instantly feels different. The overcoat changes him, and the way people see him. When he goes back to work the next day, all his co-workers are stunned, and amazed on his new overcoat. Not the tattered thing he used to wear to work, but a nice, elegant overcoat that would seem to give him more respect. Which does happen at the job. He doesn’t get called names or picked on by the younger workers. He is respected like he should, all because of the overcoat (p931). When he gets it, he even gets invited to a party, or a gathering after work. Basically what is getting proven here is that he got treated differently at his job once he got the new overcoat. As when the people at this job begin to take more notice in him. They don’t just see them as a person sitting and doing this work, but more of a person with new meaning, and a new outlook in life. When Akikay gets his new overcoat he is instantly changed. He feels younger again, new. Akikay is almost a different person you could say. In one aspect it could be said that he feels a lot more powerful, and stronger. The overcoat changes enough for the people around him to take notice in him, and his new overcoat. Instantly he is a new person. When he gets invited to the after party, he goes, which isn’t like him. He even has a good time. He thinks about girls, especially when he sees a picture of a woman on the wall at the house he goes to. Which symbolically could mean that the overcoat could have been a new brain for him?. After the party something terrible and drastic happens.. But when he goes to work with the overcoat, his work seems to differ, its not as focused. He seems to slack off, unlike him. He had never slacked off, and he had been the best copier in his class, and though he did never rise in class’, he always seemed to stay in his field/class. Here what is shown is that he changes ever so much, due to the new overcoat. It would seem to be that Akikay was having the good life once he got this new overcoat (p927-). Everything seemed to be going his way, he had been gone to a party, and even been respected at his job. He was walking back home, and it was really late, and at night where he lived and the timed he lived in it was really not the best idea to walk buy yourself anywhere you were going. Akikay ended up getting mugged, and his new overcoat that he had just got was token away from him (p933). He went to the police and demanded a search, they said ok, or that they would start a search up. Now with out his overcoat, which he had worked so hard for, he was back to his old self, he seemed to be weak again, and fragile. Knowing that going to the police wasn’t the best idea. So he went to some much higher, he demanded that something be done to find his overcoat. But the personage wasn’t having it, he shouted at Akikay, frightening him basically to death, because Akikay does die (p938) (could mean the overcoat was a sign of power, and longer life for Akikay, and with its loss, his life is lost).
