In the beginning of the hunt, he used the Malay man-catcher. The man-catcher uses a large dead tree set on a certain angle on a live on which is activated by a protruding bough that causes the dead tree to crash down on the enemy. Although this did not kill Zaroff, it did injure his shoulder and caused him to go back to the palatial chateau for medical attention, buying Rainsford time to move on. Also along his journeys, he learned to make a Burmese tiger pit. The tiger pit is a hole with sharp stakes placed spike-side up on the bottom of the pit, which is then camouflaged by a covering. Once again, Rainsford didn’t defeat Zaroff using this trap, but he did kill the best hound in the pack. Another trap he used was a springing sapling trap from Uganda. The trap used a sapling with a knife attached to it that was tied back so when it was triggered, the sapling would spring forward and kill whatever was in its way.
