Crimes of the Heart

...which is of course the main theme of this play. Her life style is much like an old woman, she’s afraid of getting close to anybody new, spends her time in the garden and taking care of her grandfather, it just seems like she doesn’t have the courage to try things for herself but she just keeps doing what she knows wont hurt her and she’s not much of a risk taker like Meg. Lenny would best be described as a babysitter, she does a job and she does it well, she takes care of others but she doesn’t think about her self, this intern is to do with the responsibility issue, she feels she’s so important to her granddaddy that she has no time for herself ; this seems to be her excuse for most things in the play. Being Spontaneous is something most people don’t have, but the ones who do have it are usually risk takers. Meg would definitely be the one considered the most spontaneous in this play. “Why, Meg’s always run wild – she started smoking and drinking when she was fourteen years old, and she never made good grades – never made her own bed! But somehow she always seemed to get what she wanted. She’s the one who got singing and dancing lessons; and a store-bought dress to wear to her senior prom” (Henley 40). This quote gives one an idea of how Meg was when she was younger, one would say she was the rebellious teen who did whatever she wanted, one might even say this leads to being more independent once getting older… and Meg was the one who left town to become a singer (fairly spontaneous), she in the group of sisters isn’t the one to put her life on hold for others. “Well, it was Meg who refused to evacuate” (Henley 41). In one point of the play we hear about a hurricane which Meg refused to evacuate, this is basically another show of being spontaneous; even though its also what one might consider an act of complete stupidity, it still is spontaneous. The way Meg is so spontaneous does also help Lenny; who called a man she was with once and decided to see him again, this might not even have been done without they way she had seen Meg be so courageous in the past. The things in this play which seem to be the strongest bonds between the sisters would have to be the actual “crimes of the heart”. By this I mean the things which affect them all emotionally. This play revolves around emotional problems which bring the sisters closer together, the main one being Babe shooting Zachary. Which of course brought Meg back into town, but it did more than that it caused sort of a rift in the family. These sisters had been distant for a while and in this short period formed a bond which they didn’t seem to have prior to all these events. They found that they cared a lot for each other and liked being in each others company rather than being without it, it seemed as the only time they showed their happiness was when they were together, just the three of them. These bonds reflect each character and also change all their lives, Meg becomes more of a caring individual and Lenny becomes more of a spontaneous individual, an observation to be made here is that they are both gaining qualities from each other, Meg gets a little more responsible and Lenny gets more courageous. There are many conflicts between the sisters in this play but the main would have had to be between Lenny and Meg about an incident with Granddaddy. This was when Meg lied to him about her career and later Lenny flipped out when talking about it. “She lied! She sat in that hospital room and shamelessly ...
