Tolerence in Today's Media
...in certain persons, but when a gay couple walked up, the men stopped them and said, “No, step aside please”. The commercial continues and the bouncers stop a lesbian couple as well. The commercial turns black, and white letters jump on to the screen reading, “Jesus never turned anyone away, neither do we”. Directly after this, a narrator begins to say, “The United Church of Christ, no matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you’re welcome here”. Quite a compelling commercial, but not unexpected from the most liberal coalition of churches ever put together in the U.S., right? The UCC raised over two million dollars for these commercials, they were well done, and there was no reason that affiliates from NBC, CBS, and Fox couldn’t run them. But, heaven forbid NBC and CBS run something with so much controversy. As soon as the commercials were shown to heads of each company, phone calls were pouring in to ban the commercials. Claims that the church was not a true church to God, that these people were Satanists for supporting gays and lesbians; that they defiled Jesus by using his name in the commercial. When I heard this, I don’t think I had ever been more compelled to take action. The place where every man and woman is truly equal under god, the place where we can go find solace and repent for any “sins” we may have committed is deciding to judge people. There are people saying that this commercial, which preaches love, is in fact preaching, “Christian bashing” because it includes gays and lesbians. When was the last time an idea of inclusion was actually capitalizing on hate? It makes no sense to me; throw out all the religious mumbo jumbo for one minute; I wrote to the heads of those two companies and I asked them if they were to cut these commercials from their slots, that they must cut other commercials and shows that display sex, violence, and murder. Because logically, if a commercial showing two men holding hands trying to walk into a fucking church is bad, and that is what society would deem “controversial”, then boy are we in for a surprise. Turn on your televisions America, there are naked women defiling their bodies, men killing other men, and lies being spread by world leaders. That’s not controversy; I guess that’s good news. When building a community at any level, you must display tolerance. Not everyone is going to get along with everyone perfectly. Spare me the lies and bullshit, I’m not a little kid any more I know the world isn’t perfect. However, this doesn’t mean that we can’t tolerate other beliefs that do not infringe upon our beliefs. In fact, if we really strive towards a community, we have to be inclusive. The last time I checked, men and women were mortal. Who are we to judge; every sin is a sin small or large, it doesn’t matter weather you steel a piece of candy from a convenient...
