...hat hard. There was almost no way he could get kicked off the ranch because there would no one to replace him, unlike any of the other workers. If Slim did something bad then he would probably just get yelled at for it, but if any of the other men did something bad, they'd get tossed because they could be replaced on the spot. Slim's life at the ranch did make him soft in ways though. He cared about what happened to the workers because he had been there so long, he had seen what could happen to men so he tried his best to look out for them. He didn't open up to anyone though because he wanted to keep his mysterious and high reputation among the men. He was a pretty calm character in the book. Slim treats the men with lots of respect. He has a lot of power on the ranch and he doesn't abuse it. He treats everyone the same and he doesn't think of himself as better than any of them. He probably has more power than Curley and his wife on the ranch, but unlike them, he doesn't abuse it and treat people poorly. He doesnt't treat people like crap like Curley and his wife which signifies that he is a good person. Steinbeck put him in the book as someone who would treat others fairly and not abuse his power. Someone who people could go to. Someone whos word would be heard and obeyed across the ranch. Slim did what he could to help people and keep them out of trouble. He was very skilled at what he did and an all around good person. Steinbeck put him there to be someone that any of the workers could go to. For instance when an arguement broke out about whether they should shoot Candy's dog, everyone immediatly went to him for his point of view.
