He was learning how to survive since based on what Dr. Bledsoe had told him, that in this world he needed to learn how to lie to survive, he didn’t want to because he didn’t like it. When he arrived at Liberty Paints he found out that the paint is mostly for the government. It ironic how it’s called Liberty Paints. When I hear the term Liberty I think of the Statue of Liberty and how it represents freedom and equality. That is something that everyone should feel. When paints is put next to it the only way I can think of it is tainted. When you find out that they make the whitest white I take it back to the name and it could mean a different concept. Liberty is only for white people and that is where it becomes tainted. He meets Mr. MacDuffy and went straight to work for Mr. Kimbro. He went to work on adding dope to every single bucket of paint. He thought things were too good to be true and figured something was going to go wrong. At some point he ended up putting the wrong find of dope in the paint. He kept feeling that Kimbro was playing a trick on him. He was than sent over to Mr. Brockway on a new assignment. When he went three levels underground to meet Mr. Lucius Brockway he was asked many questions. Mr. Brockway was really mad and for the reason is because he didn’t want an assistant. He went to tell IM his full life story of the assistants that he was suppose to have and how he came back to work. “Lucius Brockway not only intends to protect hisself, he know how to do it!” ( Ellison 209). When IM went to go get lunch he accidentally walked into a union meeting. He was mad because the union was calling him a fink. He was already being talked about and nobody even knew him. He was mad to see that all these men were black. Its like they all turned against him only because they didn’t know him. He felt like back in the old days when they were checking for knives, razors or any kind of weapon. They had made a decision without really knowing him, even though he had been through a lot experiences, this one really got to him because they were all black. He couldn’t understand how they could all be against him without even knowing him. He had been gone about twenty minutes when he walked back into Brockway’s office. IM didn’t think that by telling Brockway about the union he would have gotten into a fight with him. They got into a big fight, where IM thought that he had bite him. Mr. Brockway had gone crazy. He wanted to kill him and told him to get out of his basement. He was so mad and literally wanted to kill him. IM was already apologizing when he heard the hissing of the boilers.
