This proves he didn’t want to show his weakness in front of others. Margaret Lawrence and Ernest Thompson both display the elderly as ill-tempered, grumpy, and generally unhappy. In both storys the elderly are very much associated with a near finish attitude. In the Stone Angel Hagar between flashbacks is at the end of the line, seeing doctors and X-rays and generally not feeling well. In On Golden Pond, Norman is constantly saying the end is near for him, “I should start a new book, so I can finish it before im finished myself.” The elderly are not categorized by the actual age but as how old they feel, for example Ethel is elderly in age but young at heart and is therefore not displayed as old. Similar redemption is achieved by both characters. By the end of The Stone Angel, Hagar has a glass of water which signifies her redemption and freedom she was trying to gain throughout her entire life. At the end of On Golden Pond, Norman shows emotion by accepting his daughter and telling her he loved her. Each character also had a angel they could break their own rules and make emotional contact with. Hagar’s angel was Murray Lees, Murray Lees first sees Hagar while she is wild looking ( her natural state ) She confesses she was weak, (222) “I heard them, I was frightened, too.” She confesses she feels bad for harming someone else, bird in this case...
