Mattie Silver comes to live with the Fromes after the passing of both her parents leaves her with no income and no place to live. She is supposed to be of assistance to Ethan and Zeena around the house, but her experience at being a handmaid proves almost worthless. Instead, Ethan finds himself intrigued by the bubbly girl and begins to fall in love with her, secretly knowing that she could complete his life and cause him to be content. Although unspoken of, Mattie feels the same connection toward Ethan and the two must hide their feelings. Both the mistake of allowing oneself to love another while married and the mistake of concealing true love for such a long time, whichever greater, could be avoided. If Ethan would choose the outcome of his life instead of allowing his life to choose for him, he would be successful in fulfilling his desired consequence. Perhaps the greatest and most regrettable mistakes Ethan made was the decision to drive the sleigh into the tree.
