...has escaped from the purview of Science and Technology. The developments and advancements in each and every field are illustrious. Newer and newer advances are happening day by day. Such has become the scope and expanse of science and technology and its impact on day-to-day life, that if one regresses into past he would not be able to co-relate the two epochs. The rate of growth by itself is increasing with time. The spectacles of Science and Technology are destined to throw off any person out of his senses and make him spell-bound. The power vested in human hands by Science and Technology is enormous and has thus posed a great responsibility on them. As the saying goes in political parlance that “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. The same can be applied in the case of the power given by Science and Technology. The gifts of Science and Technology have been deliberately abused by the “powerful” humanity, time and again. There are natural side effects of these gifts, but their deliberate misuse and abuse outweigh the evils of the side effects, which could have been mollified or at least minimized to a large extent otherwise. Human greed, selfish interest, lack of planning and myopic vision has all led to the abuse of Science and Technology. The use of pesticides and fertilizers has been a boon in many respects, but out of a drive to yield more and more their input to the soil was increased so much that the danger of salinity of soil started arising. Motor vehicles, no doubt emit a lot of poisonous materials into the atmosphere. This is the side effect. But the use and expansion of motor vehicles went on unchecked and proper policies to control the emission levels were not devised. Even today when various guidelines and laws have been put into force, non-compliance of them is worsening the situation. Environmental pollution has increased to terrific levels and there is concern all over the world to check it by all possible means. It is Science and Technology only, which again comes to rescue by providing efficient filters, more efficient fuels etc. But then, it is humanity again which has to take note of the situations and act accordingly. The arrogance and vested interests of big powers are also on the high. The defying of the Kyoto Protocol by the USA is one lively example. Nuclear power, which is a very efficient and environmental friendly one and can salvage all the power crises of humanity, has had been abused to produce a massive stockpile of lethal weapons which have the power to destroy this planet multiple times. Nations wanted to dominate the world by the use of this gift of Science to dictate their terms and conditions to others. This laid the foundation for an arms race and proliferation of these weapons in the hands of less responsible hands. It was the human consciousness again which degraded to use this gift of Science for devastation purposes. Today, nuclear weapons are seen as a deterrent. The friction amidst the comity of nations had never been so acute. The fear of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is fresh in the minds of the entire human race. The nuclear programmes of rogue states like North Korea and the fear of nuclear weapons are becoming an excellent tool for blackmail. Bio-Technology is a great boon for fighting against chronic diseases which humanity has been suffering from. But along with medicine, which has the power to give life and cure to the individual, humanity has also developed its means of destruction. Lethal biological weapons have been developed along with medicines. These weapons are nothing but dangerous viruses and other microorganisms, which can cause incurable diseases and thereby instant death of millions of human beings. The specter of ‘anthrax envelopes’ is a grave reality. The evil of human psyche hasn’t left the domain of communications without abuse. The various modes of communication have easened the human lives, but then it has also increased the efficiency of criminals. Newer forms of crime have come up. The proliferation of offensive and morally harmful material is on the high. The power of the Internet is being abused by the wide spread of pornographic materials. Pedophilic mentality is on the rise. The innocence of the children is being targeted at. Chat rooms have become heavens for obscene discussions, people spend hours in them and thereby distort their mentality to pathetic levels. Human society is slowly losing restraint. Pornography is as pervasive as the Internet. Millions of man-hours are consumed in this pursuit of pleasure, which will ultimately lead towards a cryptic society where male-female relationships would distort to lowest levels. Biggest abuse of Science and Technology has been to induce a tinge of arrogance in the human behavior, which is increasing by the day. The respect for traditional human and social values and natural laws is absenting itself the wonders, which Science has offered to them. The paradox lies in the fact that in an ultra scientific era, society is tending towards the most unscientific lifestyle. Power vested into immature hands without inducing a sense of responsibility ought to bring havoc. The gross abuse of the scientific spirit has been the trend of finding complex solutions to even simple problems. There is a growing trend to find the solution of each and every problem in Science, which have been found elsewhere, for e.g., in traditional knowledge systems. The drainage and sewerage systems came up as an efficient way to dispose of the human sewage and thus laid the foundation of well-organized cities. But then when these sewers were opened into the natural water bodies, without effectively treating the effluents, they created a grave menace. For e.g., Indian rivers are being freely used to dispose of the human wastes through the sewer pipes, along with deadly water wastes of industries. Science has given the solutions to treat the wastes first and then dispose of the harmless part to the water bodies. But then, human greed and self-interest is the biggest hurdle. Traditionally sewages tanks used to exist in each and every household, which had to be cleaned after an interval of 20-30 years. Distributed sewage tanks are easy to manage and thereby check the pollution in water bodies. Some effective use of this waste can be found or they can be treated locally. Managing...
