Filmic Creativity: Art Cinema
Within all works of “art cinema” there exists a level of creativity and originality that separates it from the conventional methods found in the strict formula of classic Hollywood cinema. When applying Bordwell’s concept of art cinema to a conventional film or body of films produced by a single auteur, it becomes clear that there are underlying psychological and structural implications that aid in the novelty of such films. ... Art cinema is, however, like a Gestalt picture. ... Bordwell’s “art cinema” is fully represented in the work of the Coen Brothers. All of their pieces lend testament to what Bordwell claims but it is the specific work of The Big Lebowski that truly embodies the art-house influence. In every element The Big Lebowski is a reflection of valid art cinema. Through an understanding of its principle characteristics; narrative, characters, and editing and mise-en-scene; the movie itself becomes a symbol of Bordwell’s art cinema ambiguity.
In order for a film to earn art cinema status it must truly diverge from what is known as Classical Hollywood Cinema. Before examining the parts of art cinema that lead to Bordwell’s view on the whole, an understanding of the differentiation must be established. Classical Hollywood Cinema utilizes a formulaic technique that is almost never varied upon. From story to staging all aspects of Hollywood cinema are comparable to industrial production line manufacturing. ... More specifically it is the classical narrative cinema and the assumptions made about narrative structure, cinematic style, and spectatorial activity that represent such films. Art cinema varies by breaking the conventions created by Hollywood motion pictures. Through realism and authorial expressivity and the way each play into the ambiguity created by techniques such as directing and scripting, it becomes clear that individual artists have tremendous influence and persuasion on the filmic product as a whole. ... Yet their films always bear some resemblance to art-movies, in which story and characters serve partly as means of exploring/deconstructing a philosophical or formal/aesthetic idea.
