Egyptian fashion vs. Mesopotamian fashion

They experienced different seasons and the heat was not as extreme as it was in Egypt. Shoes were worn when walking on rough ground or up hills. In Egypt sandals were only worn for special occasions and only by the very wealthy. Since Egypt was so hot and humid, their choice of clothing was very thin and light. They almost always wore white because it would not attract the sun and help them to stay cooler. In Mesopotamia white was not such a common color. Bright and patterned fabrics were used more frequently. Linen was the fabric that most of Egyptian clothing was made out of because it was so light. While linen was not uncommon in Mesopotamia, animal skins and leather offered them more protection from the elements. Both cultures made linen the same way. They started off with Flax, which is a plant that has a very long stem. They would soak it for several days while the fibers separated. Then they would take the fibers and twist them to form strong threads. The threads would be woven and made into a fabric that they could use to make clothing. Along with the similar use of linen, both cultures also used ornate belts to either hold up their garments or decorate an outfit. The belts were almost always made of animal skin. There was detail bead work done on both and sometimes fringe dangling down onto the tunic. Ancient Mesopotamian fashion consisted of little jewelry. Their hair was pulled back simply or just worn down. Uncomplicated jewelry was sometimes worn but not required. In Egypt, jewelry played a huge part in their society....
