In addition to the characters, the setting in the film and story also differ. The setting, an occurring difference throughout both renditions, causes another point of contrast. The story is set 200 miles from London, England during a harsh winter in December. The movie, however, is set during the fall of California. Most of it takes place in the minute town of Bodega Bay with just a minor portion in San Francisco, whereas the story is set in the country. In addition, the time frame of the two also differ. The story is set just after World War 2, though the movie takes place in the early 1960s. Events taking place in these various areas are also a major difference. The five attacks in the story don’t even compare to that of the countless ones in the movie, however, some of the attacks are similar. In both versions, the birds attacked by means of the chimney. Also in both, a close friend of each of the two families are murdered by the birds. In the story, this is Mr. and Mrs. Trigg (farmers which Nat works for) and in the movie the school teacher and close friend, Annie Hayworth, is murdered.
