Now with his own ambition and his wife backing him he held his future in his hand. Macbeth had free will in the things that were to follow. He had the choice to kill Duncan, but was he absolutely positive that Malcolm and Donalbain would flee. This is the point that I think it is possible that fate could have stepped in. Macbeth was fortunate and Duncan’s sons did flee and he was crowned king, but if Duncan’s sons would have stayed, one of them would have been crowned king. So fate presents itself in the fact that they did flee and Duncan’s murder was not for nothing. Banquo was now becoming suspicious of Macbeth and the prophecy, and Macbeth now feared Banquo and his portion of the prophecy. Macbeth recalled the witches saying that Banquo’s sons would rule meaning Macbeth would have no bloodline in the throne. Macbeth once again approached a fork in the road.
