That same year, the citizens of West Berlin were no longer allowed to enter East Berlin. The border between West Berlin and East Berlin had a total length of 166 km, with a deadly system of barriers. There was a wall at the border, with a border area inside of that. The border area contained a wall which was made of concrete slabs with a height of 4 m, usually with a concrete tube on top of it. Behind the area, was an illuminated control area or also called the death area. The refugees who tried making through were shot without warning.
