First Person Narrative in Jane Eyre

She spends a great deal of time trying to avoid her cousins, in such ways as hiding in the library and losing herself in the world of literature. The very first line of the novel is very important and hints at the restrcitive ature of events to come. 'There was no chance of taking a walk that day.' It is negative and indicates that Jane is in a situation which she can not control. We, as readers, can not help but be moved by the scene where John Reed discovers Jane hiding in the library and he completely humiliates her infront of his sisters, not only by telling her she is unwanted, but also by throwing the book at her head. This scene is a metaphor which makes significant comment about the working class education. It almost tells the readers that in Victorian England...
