Rebel Without a Cause--How to Modernize this 1955 movie
...this movie, Jim is a good kid gone bad. As a result of peer pressure, Jim does bad things to fit in and ultimately becomes a stereotypical bad boy himself. If this movie was to be remade today, I think the best actor to play the role of Jim Stark would be Colin Farrell. Farrell is Hollywood’s current bad boy. He is good-looking, he drinks, smokes, curses and is known for sleeping around. His own life could be labeled as a rebel without a cause! He is also known for his sex appeal, as James Dean was back in his day. Just having him star in a movie like this is enough to get audiences interested. To replace Judy, Jim’s love interest in the movie, I would use another actress named Natalie; Natalie Portman. Portman is a young, attractive actress on the rise and I feel she would complement Farrell well in this film. To round out the group, I would cast Matt Damon as Plato. Damon is also a young, good-looking, popular actor but not known as being as bad as Farrell. I think he could play the role as Jim’s insecure, tagalong friend very well. Other people that I would cast to make this movie more modern and up-to-date, would be Nick Lachey, Justin Timberlake, and Ashton Kutcher as Crunch, Goose, and Moose, otherwise known as “The Gang”. All of these people are young, good-looking, popular people in Hollywood. While watching this movie, Plato’s friend, Mrs. Davis reminded me a lot of Oprah, so I would definitely have to have her play this part. I also think it would add a lot of excitement to the film to recast the two officers with the cops from the hit TV show, Reno 911.
