The world of hacking changed again when a hacker named Ken Thompson invented UNIX, a operating system that could present the same format and capabilities on several different types of machines, creating a common software for all to use. The expansion of the ARPANET into the Internet and the development of the World Wide Web also helped to bring hackers around the world closer together. Many people today see hackers as computer crime geniuses, breaking codes and cracking systems, however these assumptions are not completely accurate. Early hackers accessed computers simply to learn about the machines. Today the trends have changed and hackers want unauthorized access to computer systems just to make a statement. Hackers want to show that security systems can be breached. Often they mean no harm, they just want to see if they can accomplish challenging tasks. Unfortunately, many of the actions break the law and disregard privacy issues.
