If Madame Loisel would have been strong enough to overcome her pride and wear flowers to the dance then none of this would have happened, or if she overcame her pride and told her friend that she had lost the necklace, she wouldn’t be living the life that she is today. In the story “The Scarlet Ibis,” brother’s pride takes over his love for his younger brother, Doodle, which causes a very unfortunate event. Brother has so much pride that he taught Doodle how to walk so that brother won’t be embarrassed and be known as “The kid with the brother who can’t walk”. He was ashamed of having a crippled brother and taught doodle how to do things for himself, not for Doodle. “’There was within me (and with sadness I have watched it in others) a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seed of our destruction, and at times I was mean to Doodle’” (486). This is a quote from “The Scarlet Ibis” by brother that showed that even though he loves his brother a great deal, his pride got the best of him and he too, is cruel to Doodle. After that it started raining and the brothers needed to get home, brother ran ahead, not because he wanted to help Doodle along with his running abilities, but because his pride took over. He felt as if he could just run away from his problems and not even have a crippled brother. Little did he know that his pride was what caused the death of his only brother, William Armstrong. Finally, in “Blues Ain’t No Mockin Bird”, Granny and Granddaddy work hard and try to gain respect but their privacy is violated. Their strong pride helped them stand strong. Granny has pride that she doesn’t use food stamps. Also she takes pride in her life and the way she lives. She doesn’t want the camera men intruding in on her and her family and she doesn’t use food stamps, so she doesn’t want to be apart of the film.
