...hat were the accusers would often go into contortions and would shriek in pain. They would say that the accused specter was pinching them, biting them, and choking them. There was never any proof of the specters torturing them. The people at that time believed that Satan was acting on them through a witch. Every time something went wrong they pinned it on the witches. Witches also made it easier for people to consider themselves Gods’ people rather and Satans’ people. Opinion I think that all of the trials in Salem were scandalous. The people of the New England Colonies led plain, ordinary lives. They were tired of reading the Bible hour after hour, and they found supernatural spirits interesting. Anything that they heard about the supernatural spirits they believed. The colonists were so scared that they often thought they saw witches or their specters but they really did not. Land was also in a shortage in the New England Colonies. A man wanted his sons to have 45 acres to live on when he passed away. It was necessary that each son received 45 acres to live on. If a man had a couple of boys there was no way that each son would receive 45 acres. Men and young girls would often accuse old women of being witches so they could receive land and property from their neighbors. These old women were often their neighbors. I think the whole reason behind all of the old women being witches was just a way for people to get more land. The accusations of people being witches and warlocks was all for personal reasons.
