...e main character was so compelling and eventful. It took the reader from a quiet home in the prairies to a large city where the protagonist finds himself in jail, in love and in a whole lot of trouble. Unfortunately once the accounts of all the characters began to develop and intertwine the book becomes very difficult to follow and it becomes very easy to simply lose track of what was happening in the prose. This novel is one that requires the reader to pay very close attention to very small details in order to completely follow the unfolding of the plot. This novel is gripping in its narration of the stories of the first immigrants and how they had to cope with the hardships of being in a country where there were many cultural hurdles that needed to be conquered. It also shows the development of the first cultural communities within the Canadian culture....
