...rmer will say that the more they produce the less the price of the product. 1For example, in local newspapers under Financial Times, a headline would say, "Frost hits coffee, prices up" or "Good harvest of wheat means lower prices". The way to deal with this has been to control the market mechanism by imposing quotas and providing subsidies. Only the two major developed blocks - the US and EU can afford to do this. GM will help maintain controls (of crop production); it does not aim to increase production. The result is that the rest of the world suffers hunger resulting from the distorted market. The answer is not to go back to a free market, but base production on agreed sustainable goals. In my opinion, I would have to agree with Action Aid, who said Britain, which is due to decide on whether to grow GM crops commercially in coming months, should not accept them in the name of developing countries. Firstly, there is no evidence to support claims that GM crops will help solve world hunger. 2“GM does not provide a magic bullet solution to world hunger. What poor people really need is access to land, water, better roads to help get their crops to market, education and credit schemes” says Matthew Lockwood, Action Aid head of policy. There should be no further commercialization of GM crops until more research has been carried out on their impacts, especially in poor countries. Further more, the argument that GM will not solve third world hunger is a fallacy put around by the companies who produce GM. The reason being that farmers in third world countries normally save seed from one crop to sow for the next. With GM you can't do that. You have to buy the seed and the pesticides from the companies afresh each year. This is not good. It puts the farmers in hock to the GM companies. Also, it reduces the number of varieties that farmers are growing - which is dangerous. It's important to have lots of different varieties of things because if a disease affects one the others won't be affected. By growing GM you will also actually spray the crops with more pesticide because they won't keel over, as they have been Genetically Modified, only the weeds do. This is not good. Do we reall...
