...ilkman throughout the play, making his daily rounds with his horse Bessie. The morning routine rules in the Gibbs and the Webb’s households too. As the kids ready themselves for school, the parents drink their coffee and share the breakfast table with their children before the kids run off to school. Moms begin their daily chores. But by late afternoon the children leave school to play outside before beginning their homework. In the evening, the women look forward to talking and sharing local gossip at church choir practice. When the Mother gets home there is still work to be done around the house. The kids try to extend there bed time to stay up a little later before getting caught by there parents. Things in Grover’s Corner are remarkably consistent. For example, in Act 2, 3 years may have passed but nothing much has changed. Mr. Newsome and Bessie still deliver the milk. There is still a Crowell delivering the newspaper. Mothers still cook breakfast see their families off to work and school. Babies’ from the beginning of the play have started to talk and walk, and young people have fallen in love. Some things have progressed, but little has changed. Act 3 takes place 9 years later when we hear of cars coming to town and even robberies taking place. But at the core little has changed. When we look in on Emily’s 12th birthday, you see the same routines that characterized the first two acts. Now in the 21th century daily life in America is still characterized by the routine. Paper boys and paper girls are still delivering newspapers house to house. Customers might not have the same social relationship with the paperboy/girl as they did back in Grover’s Corner, but newspapers still get delivered by hand. Milkmen may not be as abundant as they were back in the 1900’s, but some still prefer to get their dairy products delivered daily. In most American households parents wake up first, drink their coffee and talk before the children come running down for a quick breakfast before heading off to school. The departure...
