James’ ideas and how they support the claim that God exists because people have had religious experience will be discussed in this essay. James thought that religious experience had 4 basic features. They could be ineffable, where it is impossible to use words to describe the experience; noetic, where an experience carries a message; transient, where the experiences are brief but have a long effect; or passive, where a person has a sense of being controlled by another “being”. People at the time dismissed religious experience as a product of a faulty mind but James accepted this as “religion and neurosis” and saw this as no problem. James categorised religious experience into induced or spontaneous groups. For induced religious experience, James said “the drunken consciousness is one bit of the mystic consciousness, and our total opinion of it must find its place in our opinion of that larger whole.” So, religious experience can happen because of either an influence such as alcohol (induced) or be spontaneous and true. James said that religious experience produces a new enthusiasm for life that often leads to significant changes and a sense, peace of security and great love for others. This idea that James had, supports the claim that God exists because it shows how powerful a religious experience can be that can only come from God.
