school life in the 1930's (letter)
...n school, is that boys are allowed to fight but not girls. I found this rule out the hard way. Growing up my parents, especially my father, taught me that if I was getting picked on to defend myself. Well in my first year of grade school a boy was making fun of the flowers on my dress, and I decked him one. I got into a lot of trouble and I realized that my parents weren’t telling my to beat anyone up but just not to let them pick on me. Another thing that hasn’t changed since I’ve been in school is that schools are poor; they’re poor because no one now a days can afford the taxes to pay for supplies. However when I was learning to read I remember the books we used, they were called Dick and Jane readers, they were stories about two little children with the names of Dick and Jane. School is also a place of being proper and respecting your teachers, if you don’t listen to your teacher you’ll get whipped. I have only been whipped a few times...
