This is also true in Ozzie Smith’s induction speech, where his mother told him “‘Oz, you can do whatever you want as long as you believe in your dreams with all you heart.’the power of those two shells has been life sustaining throughout my entire career.” Without the love and support of his mother, Ozzie Smith would not have been able to begin his quest as well as sustain it throughout his entire career. The last ingredient was courage to persevere, which both Ray Kinsella and Ozzie Smith show throughout their missions. Ray continued to show his courage to persevere when making his baseball diamond. “My back ached as if someone were holding a welding torch against my spine, turning the flame on and off at will. But I sanded. And raked. I combed the ground as I would curry a horse, until there wasn’t a pebble or lump left to deflect the ball. And as I finished I ignored my throbbing back, triumphant as if I’d just hurled a shutout.” Ray was able to persevere the pain and agony it took to build his field, showing courage, to finally accomplish his mission. This is also true for Ozzie’s journey. He said, “It takes courage to see any great quest through its ultimate completion. Over the years I, like many other individuals who have chosen to attempt a seemingly impossible dream, have experienced numerous moments where sudden barriers arose, achievements were denied, important relationships were fractured, detours had to be taken, disappoints endured.” Ozzie as well as Ray both endured many disappointments and troubles, but with the help of courage, they were able to pull through to fulfill their dream. When Ozzie Smith said that the greatest thing was the gold at the end of the rainbow, he was referring to the opportunity to help others. Ray and Ozzie use their accomplishments to help others.
