... The British noticed this but could do nothing about it, so they abandoned the town, but before leaving, they set it ablaze. My Opinion This Battle was an absolute waste of time, because the British didn’t do anything to fight back against the Americans. It wasn’t really even a victory because the British set fire to the town of Boston, and all the Americans won was a bunch of burnt land. THE BATTLE OF LONG ISLAND AMERICAN COMMANDERS BRITISH COMMANDERS Gen. George Washington Gen. William Howe The Setting The Battle of Long Island took place on August 27, 1776. Gen. Howe was determined to crush the rebellion, so he returned to New York with 32,000 men. The Battle The Battle of Long Island started when Howe sent 20,000 of his troops to invade Long Island so that they could use the port in New York to supply his troops more efficiently. Howe split his troops in half so that he could hit Gen. Washington from two sides. Washington knew he had no chance and fled him and his troops across the East river into New York. Howe, instead of attacking right away, waited a few weeks to chase after Washington. Howe then attacked and defeated Washington again and made him flee to the north of Manhattan Island. Then Washington moved his troops across the Hudson River into New Jersey were Howe and his forces had to chase them down. My Opinion Washington had no chance of defeating Howe’s British troops so it was a very noble decision to admit that he had a weaker force and run from Howe and regroup with more troops because it might have been the end of Washington if he had stayed. Battle of Trenton American Commanders British Commanders Gen. G. Washington Col. Johann Rall The Setting It was Christmas Eve 1776, Washington had to cross the Delaware with 2,400 soldiers to attack a camp of Hessian mercenaries. The commander of the Hessian mercenaries, Col Johann Rall, received a critical piece of mail that he decided to ignore. The mail told of the advancement of Washington. The Battle The 2400 American force slaughtered the 1400 British forces. The British escaped with 22 killed, 92 wounded, and 948 captured..The American forces only had 4 wounded. My Opinion This American victory wasn’t one from just shear luck. Even if Col. Rall would have opened the letter the American’s would of had more men than the British. Battle of Germantown American Commander British Commander Gen. Washington Gen. William Howe The Setting The battle occurred in Oct. 1777, in Germantown, after Washington was en route with his 11,000 men to attack Gen. Howe’s camp of 9,000 men. The Battle Gen. George Washington’s forces held after many frontal attacks, but Gen. Washington decided to try to flank Gen. Howe from the right. This attempt to trap Howe was halted when fog set in and caused great confusion amongst the American troops. Gen Howe used this to his advantage by launching yet another frontal attack. Gen. Washington finally decided to pull his forces back after losing over 500 men through a combination of capture and casualties. My Opinion This battle proved to the Americans that they weren’t as indestructible as they thought. While the British were out numbered they still won the battle, this shows how Gen. Washington wasn’t the savior that he was made out to be. This also showed how favorable weather is a necessity to a successful battle. Battle of Monmouth American Commanders British Commanders Gen. Washington Gen. Charles Lee Gen. Henry Clinton The Setting The battle occurred in July 1778 when Gen. Washington’s 13,462 men attacked Gen. Clinton’s 13,059 men from the rear. The Battle The Americans had the distinct upper hand after attacking Gen. Clinton’s supply line and engaging in battle with the rear of Clinton’s troops. This upper hand didn’t last very much longer after Gen. Charles Lee decided to pull his men out. The battle ended in a draw after 152 Americans and 190 British men lost their lives. My Opinion I believe that if Gen. Lee hadn’t of left Gen. Washington “up the creek with out a paddle” the Americans would have been the clear victors. Although, the battle was a draw the Americans obviously gained the advantage after restricting Gen. Clinton’s supply line. Battle of Kings Mountain American Commanders British Commanders Col. Campbell Col. Cleveland Col. McDowell Col. Sevier Col. Shelby Maj. Patrick Ferguson The Setting 900 Frontiersman trap a force of 1104 Loyalist militia at the top of a ridge, near the border between North and South Carolina in York county S.C. The Battle The battle was an intense fight between the frontiersman and Loyalist Militia for an hour. The loyalists decide to give up after their commander, Maj. Ferguson, was killed. The American forces experienced 28 deaths and 62 wounding, while the entire British forces were either killed, wounded, or captured. My Opinion I believe that this was a pathetic attempt by the British, that ended up as just another win for the Americans. Also, I wonder how the British even thought that they would even have a chance when they’re surrounded by excellent marksmen such as the frontiersmen. The Battle of York Town American Commanders British Commanders Gen. Washington Gen. Rochambeau Gen. Cornwallis The Setting September 1781, Gen Washington and Gen Rochambeau team up their combined 16000 soldiers to surround Yorktown. The Battle The French fleet drive off a British fleet, whose duty was to evacuate to surrounded British forces. Then, on October 9, 1781 Washington’s army open up with artillery on the British forces. The battle ends on October 19, 1781 when Gen. Cornwallis surrenders. My Opinion This battle was the finishing blow for the British. This battle convinced the British to give up the fight. This end of this battle also lead to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which officially ended the war, which lead to the freedom of America from England. Also, I believe that this battle’s end was good for America only because of the help from France, but France probably wouldn’t of help America if England wouldn’t of pissed of the French in the French and Indian war. So, the British failure was England’s own fault. THE BATTLE OF BRANDYWINE AMERICAN COMANDERS BRITISH COMANDERS Gen. George Washington Gen. William Howe The Setting The Battle of Brandywine took place on Sept. 11, 1777, Southwest of Pennsylvania in a town called Brandywine. The Battle Gen. Washington and Gen. Howe met each other in Brandywine. Again, Howe divided his forces to attack Washington from two sides. While Washington concentrated all of his attack in the front, Howe’s forces came from the right flank and attacked. Washington was forced to run from the battlefield, but Howe did not chase him. Instead, he stayed and took the town of Philadelphia. My Opinion If I was Washington, I would have thought that Howe would have had more troops then he did, and in past battles noticed that Howe liked to split his troops and attack flanks. THE BATTLE OF COW PENS AMERICAN COMANDERS BRITISH COMANDERS Gen. Daniel Morgan LtC. Banastre Tarleton The Setting The Battle of Cow Pens happened on January 17, 1781, and took place in a town in Spartanburg County, which is located in northwestern South Carolina The Battle The Battle of Cow Pens was a great military victory because it was done by the use of Calvary against British regulars who were in a disorganized retreat. An interesting fact is that, the battle was named Cow Pens because there were empty cow pens around the battlefield. My Opinion This was one of the most pointless battles, because it really had no purpose whatsoever, and their was no strategic gain. All it was, was a competition of who had the most men running around getting shot at. THE BATTLE OF GUILDFORD COURTHOUSE AMERICAN COMANDERS BRITISH COMANDERS Gen. Na...
