Short Story
...n good shape, even though over 100 years old. Being the biggest house on Cottage Street, it was surrounded by the most carefully landscaped yard. The grass always had a permanent green color to it. With the seasonal flowers fading away, and with the tall oak trees dropping the last of the dry red and orange leaves fall to the ground, the house was perfect for the family of three that lived there. “Hey mom, what kind of candle is burning?” Carrie asked, closing the dark brown wooden door heavily behind her. “Hi honey, it’s that new candle we bought at the mall last weekend, smells pretty good doesn’t it?” Carries mother, Clair, responded “How was school today? Did you do well on your algebra test you were worried about?” “I did good I think,” said Carrie “School was tiring today, good thing we only have two days left this week” Carrie started to walk out of the kitchen, taking a quick glimpse at the clock. “Is it alright if Abby comes over to play basketball, then order a pizza afterwards?” Carrie asked. “Sure honey, have fun” replied Clair. Carrie walked upstairs to the third door on the right to her huge room. The walls were gold while the floor was a light grey, the colors of her school. On all four walls were pictures of friends and family, numerous sports awards, and personal art she has done over the years. After putting on some shorts and a tee-shirt, Carrie grabbed her ball and started to practice some free throws. Shortly after that, a brand new street basketball flying out of nowhere, swished the net as it went through. It was Abby, ready to hoop it up. Both Carrie and Abby rushed to the door. Zeke Reynolds stood there, pizza in hand. “Oh my goodness” said Carrie “I haven’t seen you in so long, when did you get back into town?” cheeks slowly reddening. “About a week now, my dad’s friend owns the Pizza Den on Sunset Lane, and offered me a job. When I saw they had a delivery to your house, I had to take it. I’m sorry I never called, I missed you Carrie” Zeke said, while touching Carrie’s pink cheek Carrie was flabbergasted, the only thing that would come out of her shyly smiling, surprised face was “call me sometime” Carrie thought she would never see Zeke after he moved to Maine a year ago. He was her best friend, but she secretly had loved him, and nobody knew, not even Abby. At about 10 o’clock Abby had gone home and Carrie laid on her bed trying to figure out what to write for her poem. She finally fell asleep around midnight at her desk, still with a pencil in her hand and paper, now under her head. The next day was a blur. Carrie was so tired yet she was so excited because all she co...
