Rethinking the Natural Born Citizen Requirement for the Presidency
...aking sure that all citizens are equal is exactly in the spirit of what America is all about. Amendments to permit women and blacks to vote so that they were equal came in the 20th century, and now it is time to insure equality for all by adding another amendment. Currently, the natural-born citizen law restricts the number of people who can run. It actually weakens the pool of candidates for the job. Many great politicians are born in foreign countries and hold positions in government as governors, members of congress, and cabinet members. The natural-born citizen law holds back these politicians from a greater seat in this government. If a foreign-born American can bring a richer understanding of foreign countries, then this should be welcomed in our government and not feared. This could help our relations with other countries. It could help the U.S. become more popular from a world-wide perspective. Having a foreign-born American president would show that this nation is open to diversity. This could help the U.S. with foreign trades and treaties. Given the current popularity of the U.S., this may be a welcomed change.
