The mothers of the Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God’s Wife came to America during this time (“Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan”). Amy Tan’s literature works are about the last great Chinese immigration in the 1940’s after World War II, and the fall the Chinese government to the Communists. They take place both in China and in the United States. This time period, greatly affects Tan’s writing themes and her writing style. The mere fact that she is Asian, in particular Chinese also greatly contributes to her work. Her life as the daughter of Chinese immigrants also affects her writing and makes it possible. This can be seen in both Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club (Tan 100) and The Kitchen God’s Wife (Tan 148) . The Chinese-American daughters try their best to become “Americanized” (“Themes”). While doing this, they cast away their heritage while their mothers watch in dismay. Tan draws these ideas from her own childhood. She did not like being Asian and wanted to be white very badly. During the 50’s, being of an “ethnic” background was not readily accepted. The mothers in Tan’s books feel a strong desire to protect their daughters, and teach them “how to loose your innocence but not your hope. How to laugh forever.” While the girls are young, they do not listen to their mothers, as Tan had done. It is later on in life that she and the daughters in the books realize that their mothers only wanted the best for them, and were right all along (“Mother-Daughter Relationships in The Joy Luck Club”). Tan’s would not have been possible if she had not visited China with her mother when she grew up (Amy Tan).
