She never cared how others felt, but now she has matured and come to realise others peoples emotions, because this is what she is experiencing now. As a result of war she becomes angry, “the more anger [she] feels, the more it overtakes her sadness”. The determination to survive so she can take revenge increases her strength and ability to survive. As she grew angrier she grew strong and survived, but she wasn’t the only one who was strong. Other members of the family had there own qualities that helped them survive. Pa was polite and generous; he did what he was told therefore it kept him out of trouble. Pa being a role model had to be strong and did everything he could for the family’s survival. His son Meng also carried the same aspects as him which helped his survival. Khouy is different from them, but he too had his qualities. Loung had described Khouy, she said that he was “cool and suave, but [she] knew he was mean”. Loung perceives Khouy to have a hard strong personality; hence this strong personality would have helped him go though the war. Kim on the other hand was small, but he was willing to take risk. He was willing to do a lot for the survival of himself and the family. Chou was very different she was picked on by other at the camp, because she was weak. Her weakness had caused her to survive, because she is fearful and abides with her enemies. The family knows that their “lives will never be the same again”, but hey tried there hardest for themselves and each other. The family supported each other through the hard times, which helped them survive. Even though some members were limited to survival, they still helped the family. Ma was very limited in survival...
