There are at least two connecting themes in this autobiographical novel by Maya Angelou. One is about the caged self and how it deals with its captivity. ... The title of this book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, gives a clue to these themes. It points out the caged self (the bird, who is Maya Angelou as a child), and shows that there is hope for this self, because the bird still sings. ... The caged bird’s “wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.” The poem contrasts the free bird soaring on the warm trade winds and the caged bird standing “on the grave of dreams, his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream.” But the song that comes from the bird’s throat is not of despair or rage, but instead
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.
