... changes that might be related to the rise in adolescent suicide include an increased incidence of childhood depression, decreased family stability, and increased access to firearms. Suicidal behaviors are often associated with depression. However, depression by itself is sufficient. These are some facts about suicide in our society; suicide took the lives of 30,622 people in 2001. Suicide rates are generally higher than the national average in the western states and lower in the eastern and midwestern states. In 2002, 132,353 individuals were hospitalized following suicide attempts; 116,639 were treated in emergency departments and released. In 2001, 55% of suicides were committed with a firearm (Anderson and Smith 2001). In 2003, people aged 20–24 years had the highest age-specific suicide rate (25.3 deaths per 100,000 populations) followed by people aged 25–29 years (21.7 deaths per 100,000population) and people aged 30–34 years (21.2 deaths per 100,000 populations). Among males, those aged 20–24 years had the highest age-specific suicide rate (42.8 deaths per 100,000 populations) followed by those aged 30–34 years (35.8 deaths per 100,000 population) and those aged 40–44 years (34.4 deaths per 100,000 population). Among females, 80–84-year-olds (15.3 per 100,000), 25–29-year-olds (12.8 per 100,000 population) and 15–19-year-olds (9.5 per 100,000 populations) had the highest rates.
