Minority Report v 1984
...is shows the viewer the positives for having Precrime, almost completely ignoring the person who is put away without a crime. Both 1984 and Minority Report have the main characters change their views, but in different ways. In the beginning of 1984, Winston hates his life and how it is controlled by the party, and searches for “the brotherhood” to plot against the government. Although he never really does do anything directly against the party, he is incarcerated and there tortured and brainwashed until he believes what they want him to. In 1984, the hero does not win, the evil does. In Minority Report, there is much more of a fluffy Hollywood ending. It begins with John doing his job because he believes in what he is doing, and genuinely thinks that it is good. This continues until he finds a flaw in the system, the system is after him specifically. The system changes to fit the needs of the people, which is brought out by John’s. The hero wins in this story, and he ends up happy. Right away you can tell that the tones of the stories are very different. In the beginning of 1984, it describes many of Winston’s physical and emotional problems as the result of the society. It describes the settings of the neighborhoods and families. The reader would most likely have a dark negative image about the setting in 1984. It states that Winston is in bad physical shape, and is clearly unhappy. One would imagine that the setting would be unpleasant, somewhat boring, and dirty. In the beginning of Minority Report, it shows you a horrible gruesome double homicide and shows you how it can be prevented. It catches the viewer’s attention and gets them to see the good things about Precrime so that you stay in John’s train of beliefs throughout the movie. You first see the society with Precrime as a good thing, and everything they show looks nice, bright, clean, and modern, but as John runs into conflicts, the setting gets sort of darker and dirty until the problem is resolved. Minority Report is a movie that has you hanging along with the main character and rooting for him the entire time, and it is very suspenseful at times.
