Immediately after the encounter with his father’s ghost, Hamlet affirms his vow with: “Yea, from the table of my memory/ I’ll wipe away all trivial fond records” (I, v, 96-99.) This quotation indicates that Hamlet will not be distracted from his goal, and his main focus will be the task assigned to him from his ghostly father: to kill Cladius. The man strives to seek justice throughout the scenes of the play, but due to his inability to act efficiently, his internal struggles, and his unsound decisions, Hamlet ultimately results in tragedy. After the incident with the ghost, the reader is led to believe that Hamlet will act swiftly upon his vengeance as he states, “O cursed spite/ That ever I was born to set it right!” (I, v, 197-198.) He is almost implying in this quotation that his sole purpose in life has become the settling of scores. On the contrary, it can be proven that Hamlet is very inefficient in his method of managing his conflict with Cladius, and this flaw of character is a contributing factor to tragedy.
