"They had a Lamaze class." "I could've taken a cab." "It was no problem," he lied. He picked up her bag and they headed to the baggage claim carousels. She chattered as they walked — about the weather in California and Rose's baby. When they reached the baggage claim, the elderly woman Daisy had accompanied off the plane grabbed her arm. "This is the girl I was telling you about, the one who was such a dear on the plane," she said to the man with her. "Daisy, this is my son, Marcus." Just as Daisy finished hugging them as if they were her own family, a teenage girl rushed over. "Thanks for the advice about my boyfriend." "Did you meet every person on the plane?" Thomas groused when the girl rushed away again. Daisy laughed. "Not quite. I didn't get a chance to say hello to the pilots." She was the kind of woman who seemed to gather people to her. He wasn't shy or withdrawn, he just liked to stay in his own comfort zone. Lately, though, that zone had begun to feel more lonely than comfortable. "Don't you just love airports?" Daisy sighed. "They're so full of... magic. Everybody's going somewhere exciting or reuniting with someone they love. I could sit here all night just watching the people." "I don't like crowds much."   "That's because you're not looking at the people closely enough." She gestured to a middle-aged couple holding hands. "Look at them. They haven't stopped touching since she got off the plane. Isn't that sweet?" Before he could answer, she shifted her gaze. "And, oh, look." He was looking, all right, but not in the direction she pointed. For some reason, he suddenly couldn't seem to look at anything but Daisy, at the soft smile on her lips. She was so pretty! Why hadn't he noticed it before? Maybe he'd been so busy focusing on all her eccentricities, he'd never really looked at her. Now he couldn't seem to tear his gaze away from her. "That's James," she went on. "He's on leave after basic training. He wasn't sure of his welcome since he and his father had a huge argument after he enlisted. It looks like he didn't need to worry!"
