The Alien and Sedition acts of 1798 were a consequence of many troubles the United States was having at the time. ... This brought about the Alien and Sedition Acts which were criticized from the moment they were passed in the summer of 1798 to the moment they were removed. ... Adams had to do something and what he chose to do was pass the four acts known as the Alien and Sedition Acts. ... Alexander Hamilton wrote that the Alien and Sedition acts were preposterous and might even cause a civil war because of the fighting between the parties now (Doc O). Others also agreed that the Alien and Sedition acts were immoral and only helped whoever was at power at the time (Doc P), it gave the president the power of a monarch (Doc Q) and was against the first amendment “freedom of the press”. ... Although this does not seem that bad, this was the reason why the Federalists were able to pass the Alien and Sedition Acts. Since most of the nation was angry at the French and the Federalists were anti-French, they took power and in order to stop the Republican-Democrats from gaining any more power, they made the Acts to stop them and although they didn’t succeed, it showed that the party was willing to make acts that affected the country in order to gain power or to weaken the other party. The debate over the Alien and Sedition Acts revealed that the controversies were between the parties, but it also revealed the controversies between entering the war on the French side, the British side or staying neutral, and it also showed how the Americans were conflicted on their views of government and its powers.
