Films are a story told through pictures and sounds discuss
...is cast in shadow hinting at the point that disequilibria is about to occur. The frame is divided and uncomfortable. We wanted to use the lift opening shot as the shock point. The lift opening and shedding light across the characters face. The lift appears as a safe haven making it all the more shock provoking when the abduction does happen. The first sequence of music is used inter-spliced with dialogue to create confusion mirroring the fact that the character cannot see ,the sound becomes the most important dynamic of the sequence. The music is violent and harsh. The editing pace also picks up mimicking the pace of the on screen action. The following shot needed to be overdubbed because of a loss of sound. We used the screams to mask this fact. It worked effectively and is hardly noticeable due to the fact that the characters mouth is not visible. The whole of this first scene is influenced by “Fargo” (Coen/Coen 1996) the initial kidnapping scene where the victim is disturbed during her daily routine caught and enshrouded. I am not completely happy about the way in which the two scenes link together. I am convinced that another shot was needed to fill in the gap between them. The first shot shows the attacker dragging his victim into his lair. Chiaroscuro is evident here as she is dragged from the light of the door to the darker inside of the room. The music here comes on like a jackhammer, I am not happy with the music here, it sounds somewhat disjointed and perhaps a different piece of music would have been more appropriate. We wanted to create another shock here so we decided to have a moment of violence by dubbing over the impact with a brutal sound effect, however the sound we actually had sounded brutal enough. The next shot shows the killer being introduced so we used a close-up for a more dramatic effect. The main shot selection strategy changes here. While before this we were getting closer and closer in shot size building the tension. This is the peak of it allowing shot size to be made larger again. The next shot transition is possibly my least favourite element of the project. The cut is very awkward and doesn’t flow as well as it should. The next sequence we wanted the killer to circle the victim linking to a predator circling its prey. Framing wise we wanted “Emma” to appear very small in frame suggesting her frailty and the killers dominance. Throughout this sequence I don’t feel that the necessary flow is achieved. As it cuts between the two with close up reaction shots. The part of the project which I am most happy about are the shots in which “Emma” is killed. The shot itself was inspired by the torture scene in “Reservoir dogs” (Tarantino 1991) in the way it shows a very violent act in a very stylistic way. In the scene the camera pans away from the act of violence leaving the main focus the sounds of pain giving it a much more realistic emotional impact. We took this idea and built on it showing a much clearer visual signal. We decided on white walls for the very bright red blood stains. It was more visceral and more shocking creating the desired effect we agreed upon during pre-production. The image was accompanied by an overdubbed sound to add impact to the scene. We then chose a fade which is another stylistic element used after moments of extreme violence in the Tarantino film. When we fade back in we are confronted by an extreme close up of the victims eye. This reminisces of a scene in “The Texas chainsaw massacre” (Hooper 1974) we then zoom out to a close shot of her revealing blood flowing down her face. We deliberately used as many yellow lights as possible to get the eerie yellow appearance of almost decaying skin quality. The music at this point starts again but this time it is slower and more spooky in sound. We then show a reaction shot of the killer. Its much darker and shot from below at a slightly askew angle to asso...
