The addicts also put a great sum of their money into the substance, whether it is fluid, crystal, or powder, which alters their mind. Sadly, the world is not perfect and accidents do occur. The driver is almost guaranteed to get into an accident at least once in his career. The user will fall victim to the same tragedy. The driver may hit a patch of the racetrack that is covered in oil and spin out of control. In this case the driver would press the brake pedal and try to counter steer. These are a few examples of actions the driver would never have done under normal circumstances. The addict also commits actions which he would other wise never think of doing. The user may begin to steal, sell his belongings and, in some extreme cases, sell their homes. These actions occur because the user needs to try and regain control over the situation that has them flustered. As can be seen, one effect of alcoholism and heavy drug use is a loss of self-control. Second, another effect of alcoholism and drug use is depression. Compared to a healthy, happy human being, a depressed person acts quite differently. A healthy person is generally very outgoing, confident, and friendly. A depressed person is generally quite angry and unsure of himself. A depressed person likes to be by themselves or with very few people if any. The addict will sit at home and seclude him or herself from the rest of the world. On the contrary, a healthy person will grab life by the horns and enjoys himself by any means necessary. Also, a depressed human being will loose ambition. Losing ambition is one of the more drastic effects of depression. While, a healthy person will strive for happiness and greatness, a depressed individual will wait for things to go in his favor with out taking any action. Thus, without their ambition, the individual spirals deep into the depths of depression. In the depressions depths, it is very easy to succumb to confusion and self-pity. Eventually the addicts may start harming himself because they feel they have no self worth. This harmful behaviour is a form of punishment for being himself, which the individual feels is a horrible person. The healthy individual would never even think of doing anything to harm himself or any other person. This self-abuse does not help the situation the depressed person is going through, but rather, makes it worse. All this behaviour aids in doing is frustrating the user, causing them to become more and more depressed. This self-cycle of self-abuse continues until the addict cannot take any more self-punishment and needs an escape. The user may eventually commit suicide as an escape route from his depression. As can be seen, an effect of alcoholism and drug use is depression. Third, alcoholism and drug use can cause a loss of friends and family. The user achieves the loss of relationships, such as friends and family, through the 3 simple steps of obsessing over their drug, expressing their feelings, and breaking family ties. The user forgets the people that care for him, thus, completing the first step, which is obsessing over their drug.
