The idea of “giving back” to the community that provided me with some of the necessary skills in life has become an ideal that I think is worth aspiring to. I came to realize that children need good role models and that someone to look up to is a good message to send to them. For example, I have spent time reading about the work of Cal Ripkin (President’s Council on Service and Civic Engagement), and how he participates in local communities in Maryland. He is a local hero who cares about children off the field as well as on the field. He is engaged in many kinds of community projects like reading programs, as well as those kinds of projects that promote community service. His central message is very clear cut: that those of us interested in leadership positions are expected to influence the lives of others through hard work, ethical individual and community relationships, and community service. This strategy can be successful through baseball or academic endeavors by discovering one’s spirit of fair play. The spirit of fair play extends into all aspects of our lives.
