As they are talking Blanche begins to flirt with him and she tries to fish for compliments. Stanley even tells Blanche “If I didn’t know you was my wife’s sister I’d get ideas about you!” (Williams 41). Later when Stella arrives back from the drugstore after picking up Blanche a coke, Blanch even has the nerve to tell her sister “I called him a little boy and laughed and flirted. Yes I was flirting with your husband!” (44). Because of Blanche’s open and honest approach with Stanley he began to get ideas about her, which later on in the book he ends up raping her. No one deserves to be raped, not even Blanche but when you put yourself out there you don’t know what to expect. Blanches lies get her into a lot of trouble. She lies about why had to leave Laurel and come to New Orleans and in scene nine she says “I don’t tell truth I tell what ought to be truth.” (117) and because she tells so many lies she starts to believe them to be true. But all these lies she tells eventually blow up in her face when Stanley talks to a supply-man at the plant that goes through Laurel and has been for years. He tells Stanley about her promiscuous ways and how she stays in a hotel called The Flamingo and that she is a drunk. He also reveals the real reason why she left Laurel in the middle of a school year it was “A seventeen-year-old boy—she’d gotten mixed up with!” (101) as Stanley puts it. Because of Blanches compulsive lying eventually everyone finds it harder believe what she says even if it really is true. Because when she told Stella about Stanley raping her, she wasn’t to sure to believe it or not. The end result of her compulsive lying was they sent to an asylum for the mentally ill in the country. While Blanche was staying in New Orleans she met a man named Mitch who was a friend of Stanley’s who she began to date. They dated throughout the summer and Mitch was going to marry her. When Stanley found out about Blanches lies he felt obligated to tell Mitch the truth about Blanche. On Blanche’s birthday Stella invited Mitch over but he didn’t show up.
