Jim is a runaway slave that ends up traveling with Huck, destined for Ohio where Jim can buy back his wife and free his children. At the beginning of this novel, the reader gets the impression that Huck views Jim as just a black slave, and nothing else. But as the story progresses, Huck starts to form a strong friendship with Jim. Even though Huck has many opportunities where he could turn Jim in (because he was a runaway slave), he realizes that Jim has become one of his good friends. Through Jim, Mark Twain is trying to explain that race doesn’t matter. He is trying to show the reader that a white boy has befriended a black slave. Twain is trying to teach the reader that people’s race is not important. The duke and the king also play a big role in how Mark Twain explain humanity to the reader. Huck and Jim get stuck with these two con artists, the duke and the king. When Huck met them, he thought that they were just normal people. But after getting to know them, he realizes that they are really not good people. Through these two characters, Mark Twain is trying to show that reader that not all people that you meet are who you think they are.
