...ave hope to those who felt oppression had become a permanent resident in their lives, and in reality West preaches the same message. Society must be able to give hope, love, and a sense of self-worth to blacks in order for the threat of nihilism to be broken. West’s ideas impact today’s society much more than the great and famous words of Dr. King, who was merely trying to break the visible signs of racism and cultural injustices. West attributes much of the current problems to society but insists that the spotlight must not be taken away from personal choice and wrong-doing. King saw a law as an unjust law if only minorities had to follow it, even citing St. Augustine as saying, “an unjust law is no law at all.” He based his efforts on this principle to prevent injustice in America. Since the end of legal segregation and discrimination, much has changed in society to lend aid to the impoverished, but such things can only treat the symptoms and aid in beautifying the surface of our culture.
