Compare and contrast the way in which James McBride and Frank McCourt have begun their stories. Do either of these beginnings make you want to read on?
... they both have a dramatic start when one starts of like this ‘I’m dead’. I think that makes the reader want to read on and find out how can a dead person write an autobiography. As for Frank McCourt’s story it begins like this ‘my mother and father should have stayed in New York’ that makes the reader ask why they should have stayed in New York. • As for my second point it is that they both had a miserable childhood in which their parents have mistreated them like when they actually pray a funeral when James McBride’s mother got married. • We also realise that they both don’t like their dads and they complain a lot about them. • The third point is that quite coincidently they are both from New York. • My last point is that they both hated their religion or the way it was practised.
