Essential Question
...ty me!”(The Crucible p25). So the reader can see that Abigail is doing everything she possibly can to try and make John love her. Abigail is yet another prime example of the puritan ethics in action. The third example is in The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Equiano was an African child captive on a ship and was being transported to the new world to be sold as a slave. H did not succumb to the horrors of slavery and said, “And now the filth of the necessary tubs, into which the children of ten fell and were almost suffocated.”(Equiano p45). Despite these hardships he says, “I also now first saw the use of the quadrant I had often with astonishment seen the mariners make observations with it.” (Equiano p47). So the reader can see that despite everything he persevered and accomplished living in this case without giving up and even learned something new. The author’s use of perseverance in these three examples is exactly the same; no one gave up even if it meant wandering into the haze of death. These prove that today people have the same ethic of perseverance like medical students not giving up no matter haw hard the work becomes, or homeless families that never give up and always find a way to survive. The second Puritan value is of Faith. The first example of this value is in the play The Crucible. These people live their lives in accordance with what the minister believes and preaches. The minister says, “You are god’s instrument put in our hands to discover the devils agents’ among us. You are selected, Tituba, you are chosen to help us cleanse our village. So speak utterly Tituba turn your back on him and face god, face god and he will protect you.” (Crucible p49). Tituba then in turn does what the minister says and confesses and helps draw out the evil which the minister thinks in her. These people you see will do what the minister says because they want to keep their faith in god alive and ever burning. The second example of faith is also in The Crucible. In spite of the fact that Tituba claims these people are witches, which is a lie, accuses them anyways of act of faith to be forgiven by god. Hale says “now in god’s holy name-“Tituba replies “Bless him, bless him.” Hale, “And to his glory” Tituba, “Eternal glory, bless him, bless god” Hale, “open yourself, Tituba open yourself and let gods holy light shine on you.” Tituba, “Oh bless the Lord.”(Crucible p48). The reader can see the act of faith by Tituba by wanting to be cleansed by the lord. The third example of faith is also in The Crucible. John proctor wants to relieve himself of his sin but the puritans didn’t believe in confession. “But as we shall see, the steady manner he displays does not spring from an untroubled soul. H e is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time but against his own vision of decent conduct. These people had no ritual for the washing away of sins.”(Crucible p21). This shows that John withes to be faithful and have faith in god and wishes to be cleansed of his sin but cant because of other beliefs so he has to live with his sin and be faithful by following this rule of no confession. The author’s use of these examples to show the puritans value of faith is shown to be all the same and all wanted to be faithful under god. Today you can see this value being displayed by the millions who confide in prayer and church to help the through their lives, these people all have faith even if it be expressed differently such as Islamic, Jewish, or Christian faiths. The final Puritan value is of self discipline. This is first shown in The Crucible. Those of whom have been accused of witchcraft refuse to lie and give a fal...
