Aunt Kate Character Sketch
...etermined, and independent. Aside from being very strong-willed, Aunt Kate really did want what was best for Johnny, and that was shown more towards the end of the story. Although little was said about her appearance, we did learn that she was a strong, ugly-looking white squaw, from True Son‘s perspective. She was probably in her late forties. She lived in a colonial village with the Butler family. She moved in to help take care of Myra Butler, when she became sick. She was Harry Butler’s sister. The fact that she was willing to help out with the family after Myra became sick shows a gentler side to her. Aunt Kate would always yell at Johnny, and boss him around, This made him absolutely despise her. When she took his moccasins away so that he would have to dress like a white boy, there was nothing he could do about it. While True Son frowned upon her, her white family was thankful and grateful for her help. She was somewhat of a mother to Gordy because she helped raise him. To her sister-in-law, she was like a maid because she answered her every beck and call. She did the house work such as cleaning and cooking, seeing as how Myra was unable to. To her brother, she was a miracle. Without her, he wouldn’t of been able to progress with his work because he would have to care for Myra and raise Gordy. To her fellow white friends and relatives, she was probably looked at as a good, strong woman. Aunt Kate came off as an evil white woman in the beginning, but by the end she was more kind and willing to change. When Johnny got sick, Aunt Kate showed how she had changed by putting Johnny’s moccasins and Indian clothes back in his room. You could see that Johnny had an af...
